Key Components of Post-Operative Care

  • Regularly checking heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, and overall demeanor to ensure the patient is recovering well.
  • Administering pain relief medications as prescribed to keep the patient comfortable.
  • Observing for signs of pain or discomfort, such as restlessness, vocalization, or changes in behavior.
  • Keeping the incision site clean and dry to prevent infection.
  • Monitoring for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, discharge, or excessive licking.
  • Preventing the patient from licking or scratching the incision, often with the use of an Elizabethan collar (e-collar).
  • Limiting physical activity to prevent strain on the incision site, typically for 10-14 days post-surgery.
  • Avoiding activities like running, jumping, or playing until the vet gives clearance.
  • Ensuring the patient has access to fresh water at all times to stay hydrated.
  • Scheduling follow-up visits with the veterinarian to check the healing progress and remove sutures if necessary.
  • Discussing any concerns or abnormal behaviors with the veterinarian promptly.

Signs to Watch for:

  • Lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Swelling, oozing, redness, or warmth of incision site
  • Unusual behavior that may indicate complications

Contact us immediately if any concerning symptoms arise.

Proper post-operative care is essential for a smooth and successful recovery, helping to prevent complications and ensure the patient returns to full health.

Recently transferred care of our dog after our vet retired. Love Dr. Tully and all of the staff. They are so good with our wild, wiggly puppy and patient and caring with her and her humans.
