Key Components of Post-Operative Care
- Regularly checking heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, and overall demeanor to ensure the patient is recovering well.
- Administering pain relief medications as prescribed to keep the patient comfortable.
- Observing for signs of pain or discomfort, such as restlessness, vocalization, or changes in behavior.
- Keeping the incision site clean and dry to prevent infection.
- Monitoring for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, discharge, or excessive licking.
- Preventing the patient from licking or scratching the incision, often with the use of an Elizabethan collar (e-collar).
- Limiting physical activity to prevent strain on the incision site, typically for 10-14 days post-surgery.
- Avoiding activities like running, jumping, or playing until the vet gives clearance.
- Ensuring the patient has access to fresh water at all times to stay hydrated.
- Scheduling follow-up visits with the veterinarian to check the healing progress and remove sutures if necessary.
- Discussing any concerns or abnormal behaviors with the veterinarian promptly.

- Loss of appetite
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Swelling, oozing, redness, or warmth of incision site
