Pet Health Certificates for Domestic and International Travel

Traveling with your pet requires careful planning to ensure their health, safety, and compliance with transportation regulations. At Southpaw Animal Clinic of Madison, we provide health certificates for both domestic and international travel, guiding you and your furry companion through a smooth and stress-free journey.

What Is a Health Certificate?

A pet health certificate is an official document signed by a USDA-accredited veterinarian. It confirms that your pet is:

  • Healthy
  • Free of communicable diseases
  • Up to date on required vaccinations

Health certificates are often required by airlines, states, and countries for pets traveling with their owners.

Domestic Health Certificates

If you're traveling within the continental United States*, to Mexico, or to Canada, a health certificate ensures your pet meets airline and state regulations. These certificates typically include:

  • Proof of vaccinations (e.g., rabies)
  • Recent health examination
  • Parasite prevention

Pricing: $96.85 plus an up-to-date exam of $64.50

Please Note: Travel to Hawaii is not considered domestic and follows international guidelines.

International Health Certificates

Traveling internationally with your pet involves more complex requirements that vary by country. Our USDA-accredited veterinarians are experienced in completing international health certificates, which may include:

  • Rabies vaccination and titer tests (if required)
  • Microchip verification
  • Parasite treatments
  • Country-specific health forms

Pricing: $500.00–$735.00 plus an up-to-date exam of $64.50

Please Note: Additional services, tests, and appointments may be required based on your destination. Prices above do not include these extras.

Steps to Obtain a Health Certificate

  1. Fill Out the Online Form
    Start by completing our
International Travel and Release Form below. This form provides us with the necessary details about your trip and your pet.
  2. Schedule an Appointment
After receiving your form, we’ll contact you to schedule an exam. Be sure to bring your pet’s vaccination records and any required travel documents.
  3. Plan Ahead
  • For international travel, contact us at least 4–6 weeks before your departure.
  • For some countries or Hawaii, the process may need to begin 9–12 months before departure.

Before Your Appointment

To ensure a smooth process, please:

  • Review your destination’s pet travel requirements on the USDA Pet Travel website.
  • Contact your airline to confirm any travel-specific requirements, such as vaccines or forms.
  • Call the clinic to book your appointment.

Appointment Details:

  • Appointments last 1 hour to allow time to complete the health certificate.
  • Most certificates are valid for 10 days after issuance and require 1–3 business days for USDA endorsement.

What to Bring:

  • Records from other veterinary clinics, including an original signed rabies certificate and microchip implantation date (if applicable).

During Your Appointment

Your veterinarian will:

  • Perform a comprehensive physical exam.
  • Review your pet’s medical history to ensure compliance with travel regulations.

Depending on the destination, you will receive either a digital or hard copy of the health certificate. If you receive a digital copy, we recommend printing it out for your records.

Note: Arriving prepared is critical for the timely completion of your pet’s health certificate.
